CHAPTER NINE

I had invited Benson to Chicago on a whim. It was completely unpremeditated, and if I’d spent time at all thinking before I’d opened my mouth, I never would have done it. We barely knew each other and I was already inviting him to go away with me. Then again, we barely knew each other and he had invited me to meet his family, so maybe I wasn’t the only crazy one in our relationship.

Regardless, I now got to spend the week fretting. In times like this, I always felt better after talking to one of my oldest friends.

“You little vixen. A booty call weekend with a guy you just met.”

“Jayson, don’t make it sound so dirty.” Truth be told, he made everything sound dirty. That was part of his charm. “I like this guy.”

“I would hope so.” Jayson laughed at something I couldn’t hear.

“Where are you?” I balanced the phone carefully on my shoulder and brushed a bright stripe of pink nail polish on my toe.

A loud crash on his end of the line made me wince. “Max’s has half-priced mimosas today.”

“Ugh, I hate you.”

“You can join me next Sunday. If you aren’t too busy ravaging your new boyfriend, that is.” Jayson laughed at his own wit.

“Yeah.” I frowned.

“What’s wrong, love?” Jayson was pretty good at reading my emotions, even over the phone.

“Didn’t you hear me? I said that I like him. I haven’t felt that way about anyone since Ethan.” I screwed the lid back on the polish and tossed it onto my bed. “Actually, I think I already like Benson more than I ever liked Ethan.”

“That’s because Ethan was an asshole.” Jayson was good at being direct. “It’s about time you moved on from him.”

I didn’t disagree, but that didn’t make this any easier to accept. “I’m going to screw this up, Jay. I always screw up anything good in my life.”

“Don’t be such a drama queen. This guy met you because you crashed your car into him. He already knows you’re a total spaz. You’ve got nothing left to hide.”

“Fair point.” I hadn’t thought of it that way. Plus I’d also nearly gotten him arrested, and he still hadn’t run away screaming.

“How’s your dad?”

“Still alive.”

Jayson ordered another round of mimosas. “I’ve gotta go. I’ll see you this weekend though, okay? I miss you.”

“Yeah, I miss you, too. Go drink a mimosa for me.”

It was good to talk to Jayson. I’d been so consumed with life in Portstown that I’d nearly forgotten I had a whole separate life waiting for me to return.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you to attend this pageant?”

Ella threw herself dramatically across my bed. She had driven home from school last night and I’d found her in my bed when I got home from my date with Benson. When I’d poked her in the side and asked why she hadn’t wanted to sleep in her home own bed, she’d replied, “I want to snuggle.”

So I’d curled up next to her and we’d fallen asleep in a tangle just like we had when we were kids.
