CHAPTER NINE
I had invited Benson to Chicago on a whim. It was completely unpremeditated, and if Iâd spent time at all thinking before Iâd opened my mouth, I never would have done it. We barely knew each other and I was already inviting him to go away with me. Then again, we barely knew each other and he had invited me to meet his family, so maybe I wasnât the only crazy one in our relationship.
Regardless, I now got to spend the week fretting. In times like this, I always felt better after talking to one of my oldest friends.
âYou little vixen. A booty call weekend with a guy you just met.â
âJayson, donât make it sound so dirty.â Truth be told, he made everything sound dirty. That was part of his charm. âI like this guy.â
âI would hope so.â Jayson laughed at something I couldnât hear.
âWhere are you?â I balanced the phone carefully on my shoulder and brushed a bright stripe of pink nail polish on my toe.
A loud crash on his end of the line made me wince. âMaxâs has half-priced mimosas today.â
âUgh, I hate you.â
âYou can join me next Sunday. If you arenât too busy ravaging your new boyfriend, that is.â Jayson laughed at his own wit.
âYeah.â I frowned.
âWhatâs wrong, love?â Jayson was pretty good at reading my emotions, even over the phone.
âDidnât you hear me? I said that I like him. I havenât felt that way about anyone since Ethan.â I screwed the lid back on the polish and tossed it onto my bed. âActually, I think I already like Benson more than I ever liked Ethan.â
âThatâs because Ethan was an asshole.â Jayson was good at being direct. âItâs about time you moved on from him.â
I didnât disagree, but that didnât make this any easier to accept. âIâm going to screw this up, Jay. I always screw up anything good in my life.â
âDonât be such a drama queen. This guy met you because you crashed your car into him. He already knows youâre a total spaz. Youâve got nothing left to hide.â
âFair point.â I hadnât thought of it that way. Plus Iâd also nearly gotten him arrested, and he still hadnât run away screaming.
âHowâs your dad?â
âStill alive.â
Jayson ordered another round of mimosas. âIâve gotta go. Iâll see you this weekend though, okay? I miss you.â
âYeah, I miss you, too. Go drink a mimosa for me.â
It was good to talk to Jayson. Iâd been so consumed with life in Portstown that Iâd nearly forgotten I had a whole separate life waiting for me to return.
âOn a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are you to attend this pageant?â
Ella threw herself dramatically across my bed. She had driven home from school last night and Iâd found her in my bed when I got home from my date with Benson. When Iâd poked her in the side and asked why she hadnât wanted to sleep in her home own bed, sheâd replied, âI want to snuggle.â
So Iâd curled up next to her and weâd fallen asleep in a tangle just like we had when we were kids.
